Privacy Statement
Last updated: 30 June 2026
This statement explains how MOT Check ("we") handles personal data when you use motcheck.io and the MOT Check app.
1. What we collect
- Searches — the vehicle registrations you look up, to return your results and operate the service.
- Technical data — IP address and device/browser information, used for security and to prevent abuse (for example, rate-limiting).
- Analytics — anonymous usage data via Google Analytics to understand and improve the service.
- Contact data — if you email us, your email address and message.
2. How we use it
To provide vehicle results, operate and secure the service, respond to support requests, and improve the product. Vehicle data itself (MOT, valuation, checks) relates to vehicles, not to you.
3. Legal basis (UK GDPR)
We process data under our legitimate interests in running and securing the service, to perform our contract with you when you use it, and with your consent for non-essential cookies and analytics.
4. Cookies
We use essential cookies/local storage to remember preferences (such as light/dark mode) and analytics cookies (Google Analytics) to measure usage. You can control cookies through your browser settings.
5. Sharing
We use trusted providers to deliver the service — including Cloudflare (hosting/security), Google (analytics) and our official vehicle-data sources. We do not sell your personal data.
6. Retention
We keep data only as long as needed for the purposes above or to meet legal obligations.
7. Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, erase or restrict the processing of your personal data, to object to processing, and to data portability. To exercise these rights, email [email protected]. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
